OCTOBER 1999 The HBO documentary, "Dare to Compete: The Struggle of Women in Sports," was a Peabody Award winner in 1999. The documentary chronicles the achievements of women in sports from the Victorian Age to its present. Using landmark moments of American history as a barometer for women’s athletic achievements, it reveals how the suffrage movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the feminist movement of the 60s and the more recent Title IX legislation set the stage for the rise of today’s female athletic superstars. Coupled with a combination of rare footage and archival photos are interviews with tennis stars, golf greats, Olympic legends, sports administrators and historians. Agnes Scott served as a location for part of the present-day interviews and additional B-roll work. (Click on first image for a slideshow to more easily view large images as thumbnails.)
