Emory Law viewbook
The Emory Law viewbook was a unique project in its application. A viewbook is a promotional piece used to introduce and attract prospective students to an academic institution. It combines powerful, impactful images with informational components to give prospects a sense of place. Traditionally, viewbooks are indulgent projects for recruitment, offering rich opportunities for a designer's creative expression within the brand.
My Emory Law client wanted this to be an online-only tool. We discussed designing it more like a website, but she preferred a publication design delivered as a PDF. Once created, the law school loved it so much they decided to print it as well. This viewbook targeted recruitment for the competitive Master of Laws (LLM) and Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) programs. The images below show sample pages, including the cover and interior page spreads.
Emory Law Commencement
Between 2007 and 2012, I developed materials for commencement and the hooding and diploma ceremonies. While not a creative challenge, these projects were production challenges. The interiors consist of pages listing student graduate names, which often change at the last minute, requiring last-minute adjustments and proofreading.
The simple covers are surprisingly challenging to produce. The commencement cover is Emory blue and white, printed on heavy, textured cover weight paper with delicate script fonts and seals. Ensuring perfection during press checks is crucial. The hooding and diploma cover involves dies for foil stamps and blind embossing, necessitating additional stamping press checks for accuracy. These tactile production pieces hold significant importance, as they are documents people cherish for life. It's a privilege to be the chosen designer for such meaningful projects.
The Barristers' Club
The Barristers' Club is a fundraising arm of Emory Law alumni. This roll-fold pocket folder is a multi-use piece used to target the alumni community for scholarship fundraising. When folded, it fits into an A7 envelope. The main piece includes general copy, and the pocket holds two-sided inserts. These inserts, of which there were a dozen different versions with three samples shown above, allow the Barristers' Club to customize the kit for individual donor interests.
Public Interest Law Recruitment and Fundraising
This piece, resembling another viewbook, serves a dual purpose: attracting highly-desired student prospects into the Public Interest Law specialty at Emory Law and supporting fundraising efforts. The design solution then needed to appeal to these different audiences. The images here of this horizontal book, which is dramatically wide, includes covers (shown in the first and last images) and interior spreads.
